Shawmut Equipment is supplying several Manitowoc and Grove cranes on the railroad river bridge project.
An impressive fleet of cranes is helping construct the Amtrak Connecticut River Bridge.
The Amtrak Connecticut River Bridge, located between Old Saybrook and Old Lyme, CT, is undergoing a transformative $1.3 billion replacement. Originally built in 1907, the bridge serves as a critical link along Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. The new structure will enhance reliability, improve maritime navigation, and ensure long-term operational efficiency for one of the nation’s busiest passenger rail lines.
O&G Industries’ Heavy Civil Division, in joint venture with Tutor Perini Corporation, was selected as the contractor for the Connecticut River Bridge (CRB) Replacement Project. As part of this major infrastructure effort, O&G has partnered with Shawmut Equipment as their primary crane provider, relying on Shawmut’s expertise and trusted Manitowoc and Grove lifting solutions to execute complex and heavy-duty operations throughout the project.
Several cranes supplied by Shawmut Equipment are hard at work on site, including:
-Manitowoc MLC250 – handling heavy steel girder lifts
-Barge-mounted Manitowoc 14000 – supporting river span construction
-Manitowoc M250 – assisting with mid-weight and support lifts
-Manitowoc MLC200 – providing lifting power for pier construction
-Grove GHC130 telescopic crawler – offering versatility in tight or variable conditions
-Grove GRT880 rough-terrain crane – supporting general lifting across the site
-Additional Grove models, including the RT765E and TMS9000-2, contributing to material handling and equipment placement
100-Year Design
The new Connecticut River Bridge—constructed approximately 50 feet south of the existing span—will feature a two-track, electrified movable design equipped with modern control, power, and communication systems. Scheduled for completion in 2030, the bridge is engineered for a 100-year service life, serving as a lasting testament to modern engineering innovation and the lifting power behind it.
Family-owned and operated since 1957, Shawmut Equipment supplies lifting equipment and service to the construction industry nationwide, with a strong focus on New England and Eastern Canada.
